So this is the first post in my new (public) blog. I guess that
means an introduction is in order. The basics about me are all on my
info page, but a quick recap: I'm a twenty year old woman going to
university at Simon Fraser University, majoring in History. I'm a
struggling author and after I finish my bachelors I plan on taking a
year to teach in Japan. If it looks like I can't make a viable career
in writing, I'm going to be going into SFU's PDP program to become a
high school teacher.
I'll probably mention a few different people passingly, so here's a brief introduction to them:
Mum: Refers to my mother, obviously. She and I have a sometimes
tense but mostly loving relationship. She is infamously "crazy", though
not diagnosed. Any and all craziness in my brain comes from her, which
in turn comes from her mother. We get along far better when we don't
live together. She's a maternity nurse.
Dad: My dad's an acccount. He's an immigrant from England and in his
spare time he golfs. . . alot. Once upon a time he was a performer, an
accomplished singer, but a couple of years ago he caught meningitis and
he's never been the same. He's always left the discipline to my mother
and is one of those "friend" dads. I get my slobbiness from him.
Andrew: My two-years-younger brother, who I spent attached to during
childhood but rarely speak to nowadays. He has a bad temper, is more
than a little obsessive about cleanliness and is likely a genius when
it comes to IQ. He does really, exceptionally well in school and my
parents are always asking me why I can' t live up to his standard.
Emily: Seven years younger sister. Tall, blonde, leggy and
oh-so-moody, which is to be expected from any thirteen year old girl.
She used to idolize me as a child, but lately she's been coming into
her own, which essentially means rejecting me.
Loren: My boyfriend. Age 24, father's Hong Kong Chinese, mother's a
Japanese Canadian. He's preppy, ornery, comes from cultured stock and
is working on becoming a high-class chef. He's infamously stubborn and
we crash antlers alot, but don't be fooled, we positively adore one
another, even though he'd rather I was skinnier (his problem, not mine!
:P) and I'd rather that he understood that I'm just a simple little
small-town girl. We're planning on moving in together somewhere around
January.
Erin: My best friend since junior high. We don't always get along,
and we've grown apart, but we still have alot in common. She's an
incredibly talented writer and photographer, and she's getting married
to her junior high sweetheart (the guy pretty much responsible for the
decay of our friendship) next summer. I'm the maid of honour. When I'm
in Fort St John, we're both supervisors at the local Subway.
Tony: Speaking of Subway, this guy is my boss there. He's five feet
tall, skinny and Cambodian. I think he and his eight million
siblings/cousins/etc. own half the restaurants in Canada in one way or
another. He's the franchisee of the year for Canadian Subways.
James: My net best friend since junior high, this guy lives in New
York and is half-Puerto Rican. He works at a porn store and is a huge
pervert. His girlfriend Kate and I positively hate one another, with
poor James stuck in the middle. He's a music major at a local college
and he plays guitar for me. I'm in huge lust/love with him ever since
we were kids, but nothing has or will come from it. The two of us are
otherwise really good friends, and I tell him pretty much everything.
Alison: Is one of my best friends in Vancouver. She likes Indie
music and Mervyn Peake. We generally share history classes and we enjoy
perving on historical figures. We also share a love of Star Wars,
historical romance novels, and trying on horrifically ugly things that
turn out to be really gorgeous at Value Village and Winners. She, Loren
and I are pretty much attached at the hip. We buy the same panties.
Thea: My other best friend in Vancouver. She likes anime and
cosplaying. She's a proud half Greek studying to get her certificate in
Hellenic Studies. She and I took Japanese history together in our first
semester and have been pretty much inseperable ever since. She's often
the one I drag along to the cafeteria when I want lunch.
Pang: Another of my good friends in Vancouver. Her name's actually
Michelle, but most of us call her "Pang", which is her last name. It's
pronounced "Pahng" normally, but we pronounce it the way you'd read it
in English. She also likes Indie music and going out dancing. We once
smoked a pipe of weed together and then ate at least four cups of
raisins. She's a half-Korean vegetarian.
Jevon: Is the president of the anime club. He's a notorious pervert
in his 6th or 7th year of University. He has a late night radio show
that I have guest starred in! He's quite intelligent and well-read, and
we get along famously.
Karen: Cute, Hong Kong Chinese, business major. Lolita, wants to open up a teashop.
Tony: Loren's Vietnamese clone. They dress similarly, although Tony
is definitely the nice clone while Loren is the evil one. For every bit
of meanness and anger in Loren, there's two parts sweetness and
kindness and sometimes doormattery in Tony. He's incredibly bad at
videogames, which Loren makes fun of him for.
And that's all I really want to say for now. I'll have a real post later, I imagine.
